The Oratory Of St. Philip Neri

Toronto Ontario Canada

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society is active in both Holy Family and Saint Vincent de Paul Parishes.  There is more information about the Society on the Ontario Provincial Council’s web site.

`The principle of true friendship is charity, and charity cannot exist in the hearts of many without it expanding outward. It is a fire which dies without food, and the food of charity is good works.’
Frederick Ozanam

Do you need help?
Almost every day, Vincentians are helping people in need in our community and in 132 countries around the world. As members we are working to deepen our faith and to reduce suffering in the world.  Anyone needing temporary assistance, please call the rectory of Holy Family Parish or St Vincent de Paul Parish to be put in contact with a volunteer for confidential help.  Please note that most of the time, Vincentians are not at the rectory.  All that the person answering the phone can do is to leave messages for them. Please be patient and do not call the parishes after 9:00 p.m. or before 9:00 a.m.

Would you like to join us?
Anyone wishing to join the Society should call the rectory of Holy Family Parish or Saint Vincent de Paul Parish.  We’d love to have you join us.

How the St. Vincent de Paul Society began:
In Paris on 23rd April 1833, a group of six Sorbonne University students met with a middle-aged journalist, Emmanuel Baily, in his office, to form a group to be called the Conference of Charity.

The leader of the group was Frederic Ozanam, who was driven by a deep desire to find a way to help build the faith of his peers. Their purpose was simple: as a small group of friends, they would become servants of the poor in Paris - just as Jesus Christ had been servant to the people of his time.

Frederic, while speaking in defense of the Church in some fiery debates at the university, had been challenged by a young socialist: "What are you doing for the poor now? Show us your works!"

Frederic realized that talk alone would never give full witness to the truth. That same night he and some friends pooled what money they had and bought firewood for a poor family.

He continued leading the group with the help of Sr. Rosalie Rendu, who assisted them to meet the poor of Paris.

Others were moved by their example to commit themselves to serving the poor.

They chose to call their group the Society of St Vincent de Paul, based on the exemplary charitable life led by Vincent.

A quotation from St. Vincent de Paul - "Those who have loved the poor during life need have no fear of death."  Our thanks to all of you for sharing in our mission to serve those in need.
