The Oratory / Holy Family Church

The Forty Hours’ Devotion (Quarant’ Ore) originated in Milan in 1534.  The Blessed Sacrament was displayed on the altar continually for 40 hours during a time of calamity and danger. The faithful were encouraged to come and take turns praying for an hour. The devotion soon spread to other parts of Italy; and in 1551, Saint Philip introduced the practice to Rome.

The Forty Hours’ Devotion is an annual event at the Toronto Oratory. The church is open day and night for silent prayer and adoration. But there is rich sacred music at the opening Mass and closing Holy Hour.
